Baccarat compares two named hands, Player and Banker, using totals from zero to nine. Aces count one, cards two through nine retain their values, and tens plus picture cards count zero. When a sum reaches ten or more, only the last digit is used. Eight plus seven therefore totals five, not fifteen.
The names Player and Banker identify the two hands, not a requirement to be a bank or the person dealing. A bettor can choose either hand or a tie where offered. In the common punto banco format, drawing follows fixed rules. The bettor does not decide to hit a six as in blackjack. A natural eight or nine has a special place in the initial-deal procedure, so card totals must be interpreted within the full dealing sequence.
